Originally, fossils only provided us with relative ages because, although early paleontologists understood biological succession, they did not know the absolute ages of the different organisms. It was only in the early part of the 20th century, when isotopic dating methods were first applied, that it became possible to discover the absolute ages of the rocks containing fossils. In most cases, we cannot use isotopic techniques to directly date fossils or the sedimentary rocks in which they are found, but we can constrain their ages by dating igneous rocks that cut across sedimentary rocks, or volcanic ash layers that lie within sedimentary layers. Isotopic dating of rocks, or the minerals within them, is based upon the fact that we know the decay rates of certain unstable isotopes of elements, and that these decay rates have been constant throughout geological time. It is also based on the premise that when the atoms of an element decay within a mineral or a rock, they remain trapped in the mineral or rock, and do not escape. It has a half-life of 1. In order to use the K-Ar dating technique, we need to have an igneous or metamorphic rock that includes a potassium-bearing mineral.
Dating dinosaurs and other fossils
Fossils themselves, and the sedimentary rocks they are found in, are very difficult to date directly. These include radiometric dating of volcanic layers above or below the fossils or by comparisons to similar rocks and fossils of known ages. Knowing when a dinosaur or other animal lived is important because it helps us place them on the evolutionary family tree. Accurate dates also allow us to create sequences of evolutionary change and work out when species appeared or became extinct.
In most cases, we cannot use isotopic techniques to directly date fossils or the One of the isotope pairs widely used in geology is the decay of 40K to 40Ar grains in the sedimentary rock, we would likely get a range of different dates.

There is no single ideal method of dating that can produce accurate results for every kind of sample, in every context, for every chronology. Each method of dating has constraints around its use and effectiveness.
Not all methods are well-suited for each situation — and sometimes it is just not possible to use a particular dating method. To gain a reliable date from bone using the radiocarbon, or C dating method, we need to be able to extract the protein from it — collagen and gelatin. The challenge here is that the amount of protein remaining in the bone decreases with age, to the point where there may not be much left in the sample at all.
Added to this is the risk of contamination of the sample. Contamination may have occurred during the burial of the bones, or as the result of carbonates that have washed into the sample from the soils. Even poor handling during collecting and packaging of the sample can create cross-contamination between samples or add modern carbon to the sample. Adding modern carbon through contamination reduces the apparent age of the sample.
For C dating, the size of the sample is also important.
What techniques can be used for both absolute and relative dating
Lake Turkana has a geologic history that favored the preservation of fossils. Scientists suggest that the lake as it appears today has only been around for the past , years. The current environment around Lake Turkana is very dry. Over the course of time, though, the area has seen many changes.
Several techniques are used. If you want the rundown on how we learned to do this, I recommend Simon Winchester’s highly readable nonfiction book The Map.
Love-hungry teenagers and archaeologists agree: dating is hard. But while the difficulties of single life may be intractable, the challenge of determining the age of prehistoric artifacts and fossils is greatly aided by measuring certain radioactive isotopes. Until this century, relative dating was the only technique for identifying the age of a truly ancient object. By examining the object’s relation to layers of deposits in the area, and by comparing the object to others found at the site, archaeologists can estimate when the object arrived at the site.
Though still heavily used, relative dating is now augmented by several modern dating techniques. Radiocarbon dating involves determining the age of an ancient fossil or specimen by measuring its carbon content. Carbon, or radiocarbon, is a naturally occurring radioactive isotope that forms when cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere strike nitrogen molecules, which then oxidize to become carbon dioxide.
Green plants absorb the carbon dioxide, so the population of carbon molecules is continually replenished until the plant dies.

Absolute dating techniques, the the two main types of fossils. Several methods used to obtain the other techniques are two ways of dinosaur bones about.
Figure 3: The radioactive rock layers exposed in the cliffs at Zumaia, Spain, are now tilted close to vertical. According to the principle of original horizontality, these strata must have been deposited how and then titled vertically after they were deposited. In addition to being tilted horizontally, the layers have been faulted dashed lines on figure. Applying the principle of cross-cutting relationships, this fault that offsets the methods of rock must have occurred after the strata were deposited.
The problems of original horizontality, superposition, and cross-cutting relationships allow events to be ordered at a absolute location. However, they do not reveal the relative ages of rocks preserved in two different areas. In this case, fossils can be useful tools for understanding the relative ages of rocks. Each fossil species reflects a unique period of time in Earth’s history. The principle of faunal succession states that different fossil species always appear and disappear in the same order, and that once a fossil species goes extinct, it disappears and cannot reappear in younger rocks Figure 4.
Figure 4: The principle of radioactive succession allows scientists to use the fossils to understand the relative age of rocks and fossils. Fossils occur for a distinct, limited interval of time. In the figure, that distinct age range for each fossil species is indicated by the geological arrows underlying the picture of each fossil.

Dating Fossils – How Are Fossils Dated?
Most of the chronometric dating methods in use today are radiometric. That is to say, they are based on knowledge of the rate at which certain radioactive isotopes within dating samples decay or the rate of other cumulative changes in atoms resulting from radioactivity. Isotopes are specific forms of elements. The various isotopes of the same element differ in terms of atomic mass but have the same atomic number.
In other words, they differ in the number of neutrons in their nuclei but have the same number of protons.
There are several different methods for estimating the ages of fossils, radiometric dating methods are used in geochronology to establish the.

Video transcript – [Instructor] If you go to a dinosaur museum, then you’ll see guides telling you things like this dinosaur lived 50 million years ago. That one lived 70 million years ago. My question is, how do we know these things? Well, in this video we’ll look at some methods we used to date these fossils. There are a couple of ways to figure out how old these fossils are.
