Thank you Gerard for your warm introduction. It is indeed a pleasure to be here this evening to speak to you about Women in the Australian Defence Force. Before I begin I want to acknowledge the traditional owners on whose land we meet tonight, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, and to pay my respects to their elders past and present. The road that has brought me here today has been a fascinating one – one I have found incredibly rewarding. The challenge was to work with the ADF to transform the most hyper masculine culture in Australia — the warrior culture – into a more inclusive culture — one that did not lose the essence of warrior but one in which both men and women served as equal partners. Whilst I was very familiar with issues of discrimination, women in leadership, flexible work, sexual abuse and harassment, I was a novice when it came to all things Defence and military. So in commencing the Review I made it an imperative that my team and I would learn as much about Defence and each of the individual Services as we possibly could.

Australian Federal Police confirmed the existence of a fake profile of incoming Australian Defence Force chief Mark Binskin, with the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reporting that the page was used to befriend a woman in Germany and ask her for money. Anna Linden, from Aachen in western Germany, told the newspaper she received a message from a man posing as Binskin. The man said he was soon to retire from serving in Afghanistan and was looking for a partner after being single for eight years.
The Australian Federal Police said it was aware of the Facebook page, and was providing advice to the defence department on removing the profile. An Australian Defence Force spokesman said they was not aware of this particular case, but were “investigating the matter further”. Air Marshal Binskin is set to take over the role of defence chief in July. Jones’ profile was also used in a similar scam in , which was “referred to the NZ Police and also to Facebook as a violation”, the New Zealand Defence Force said in a statement.

Australian defence force remains at Queensland border despite high court challenge
The Australian defence force still has personnel helping the Queensland government administer its border, despite the commonwealth intervening in the high court to argue the border ban is unconstitutional. Those personnel are not due to leave until 8 July — despite the attorney general, Christian Porter , intervening on Friday on behalf of the commonwealth in three high court cases challenging the Western Australian and Queensland border ban.
Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia barred non-residents from entering their states in April in response to increasing numbers of Covid infections. Since then, the bans have become more controversial as the Morrison government publicly argues for states to reopen to boost the Australian economy. On Wednesday the Queensland governor, Paul de Jersey, visited the border near Goondiwindi and acknowledged the service of Queensland police and the Australian army.
A defence spokesperson confirmed that 2, ADF personnel have assisted all state and territory governments in relation to Operation Covid Assist.

Before Federation each of the Australian colonies had their own armies composed of a mixture of regular paid full-time soldiers , militia paid part-time soldiers , and volunteer unpaid part-time soldiers units. Throughout the next 47 years the Australian Military Forces, as they soon became known, remained a part-time force of citizen soldiers with only a small regular component. These forces were restricted to service on Australian territory, and two special volunteer forces, both known as the Australian Imperial Force, were formed for service overseas during the two world wars.
Citizens’ force units did, however, serve in Australian and Australian-mandated territory in the Pacific during the Second World War. This is the structure that remains in place today, although the full-time component of the army is much larger than it was in and the part-time component has shrunk considerably.
